Etagere admiration…

Derived from France and defined as a piece of furniture with a number of open shelves for displaying ornaments, the Etagere is currently all the rage in the design world…I am seeing it everywhere and I happen to love it! These handsome shelving units come in an array of finishes from rod iron, to aged bronze to antique brass to wood…and they are fabulously stylish! This beautiful piece became popular in the nineteenth century for displaying knickknacks which was typical in Victorian home decor…and is still being utilized the same way today in every genre of design….just look at the variety…

Not only do these attractive pieces add flare and interest to a space, they also provide function for storage…a place to preserve books or collectibles…brilliant! Of course, anything I can style makes my heart flutter so these fun and funky pieces are special to me:) Could your home use an Etagere?

Rustic styling…

There are so many wonderful designs you can achieve with a rustic look…think natural tones and earthy textures, simple and nature inspired organic warmth. Unpretentious and uncomplicated. This beautiful rustic style has evolved from its traditional heavy and dark appearance. The contemporary rustic style that has emerged over the last couple of years has a very fresh, light and grounded feel. Check out one of my vision boards for a project I am working on…

Are your lights on?

Have you ever walked into a luxurious hotel or contemporary restuarant and felt the ambience…the climate…the aura of the space? You may not even know it, but what you intuitively notice is the lighting. Were the chandeliers dimmed, was it bright, were there sconces strategically placed around the seating area and eyeball recessed lights casting shades at the bar? That same feeling is what your own home should convey…trust me…you’ll love it as much as I do! I practice this method in my home every day and am a true believer in emanating ambience every where! I always have my table lamps on, dimmers are installed on every overhead light fixture, and battery operated candles are scattered throughout my house for bits of glow…a glimpse of my home below…

And there are so many light options to choose from…from every genre of design, you are sure to find lighting that tickles your fancy. And I tell my clients that lighting is like jewelry…you would’nt leave the house without your jeweled earrings or necklance…don’t leave your home deprived of great lighting…please:)

Wallpaper craze…

Gone are the days of borders and animal print wallpaper. Today’s wallpaper trend is chic and modern and a fantastic way to inexpensively update your walls. And there is a plethora of options…think tropical patterns, pastel shades, geometric patterns, vintage, retro, floral, metallic and even patterns that replicate stone and reclaimed wood. The choices are endless and will most certainly add character to any room. If you plan on DIYing it, know these tips….

There are specific adhesives for specific paper and it’s important to know the difference between paper and vinyl so check the label!

Vinyl is great for areas with moisture such as bathrooms and kitchens and woven papers or fabrics are best for dry areas such as bedrooms and living rooms.

Round your measurements when purchasing wallpaper…always add two to four more rolls for waste and overages.

Have a tape measure, pencil, utility knife, level and the paper hanging brush near by. And lastly, enjoy!

No rules…

Believe it or not, there are no hard rules or secret designer laws in interior design…I know, right? There are some principles, tricks and skills, of course, that guide us to a fantastic end result, but really, us designers just share a commonality…we’re creative people by nature who use our intuition to imagine, dream, explore and create. Of course, there are some who get that degree and then others who are just plain talented. We see a space, devise a plan, and then most of the styling comes to us innately during the design process. That’s why I love the action of interior design so much…no rules. You can go as little or as big as you want. You can go colorful or black and white. You can do you. And that’s precisely why I am so excited (and, quite frankly, losing sleep over) designing my lake house. Because it is me…my vision…my creation…my dream…

And you see? The blues don’t have to be exactly the same…the rattan can vary…the white’s can be a little off and it’s all OK. In the end, it will be charming, charismatic and beautiful. And did I say my dream home? LOL…

All the feels…

Yesterday I posted some pictures of the foundation of my lake house that my husband and I are building. I’ve blogged about styling the lake house before and it was so fun to see the beginning of something my husband and I have dreamt of building. I didn’t think that when we arrived at the site to meet with various contractors my eyes would well with excitement. It was a beautiful morning, a bit breezy, but the way the sun hit the water perfectly drew exhilaration from within I didn’t know I had. I felt all the feels…and I feel blessed and grateful.

I can’t wait to share our house with friends and family…and generations to come. I envision the decor…the settee here and the blue bordered rug there…but truly what this signifies for us is love and life…

Please follow me on my lake house journey as I share the building and styling of this awesome craftsmanship.

Spring re-fresh…

Easter arrives just in time for Spring and is the perfect time to re-fresh your interiors. Just as Spring brings new beginnings, it’s also a good time to freshen up your home’s scheme…think soft neutrals and pastels. Nothing drastic…but simply switching out your heavy throws and bedding, or pillows and ponderous winter decor to light and airy pieces will automatically vault your home into Spring-ness. It’s also a great time to rid your home of winter items like worn out jackets and hats and gloves or outgrown toys or grimy items thrown in the closet that haven’t seen the light of day in awhile…you know what I’m talking about!

Easter brings families together for wonderful meals and adoration and so does Spring…think outdoor picnics, relaxing winery trips, hiking, biking, parks, whatever your  forte. Togetherness. Fresh Scheme. New Beginings. That’s what Spring all about. Bring the outdoors in with some fresh flowers or herbs, lighten your interiors with pastel hues, set your table for family meals. Be intentional…in your life of course, but also in the styling of your homes. A vase, a pillow, books, topiaries, decorative vignettes, a frame…all should have a special place…

Lastly, friends, happy Easter and happy Spring!!
